Back in the day, when Israel struggled to come into existence against mighty odds and American Democrats still thought that was a courageous and righteous struggle, the brand-new Jewish nation handicapped itself severely for decades trying to create heaven on Earth through the theories of European socialism.
Today the elements of socialism have been discarded in favour of one of the most dynamic venture capitalist societies in the world. At the same time, however, Israel has paradoxically created a huge and growing entitlement class that soaks up the national wealth with incessant needs and basically returns nothing.
We are speaking of the ultra-orthodox Jewish community, which have a startling resemblance to similar unemployed and educationally unemployable masses in the USA who subsist on a variety of welfare programs but do little in return except vote. They always vote, of course, for the politicians who will give them more and better welfare.
The Ultra-Orthodox like to stay in college forever studying what it means to be a Jew. We have that exact equivalent in the USA where endless college loans (likely to never be repaid) finance ethnic studies and all manner of esoteric academic specialties that are extremely unlikely ever to suit one for employment in a competitive world economy. It used to be that the American lower classes at least served in the military, but they are rapidly becoming unsuitable for that because they are too fat and too uneducated, especially in technical knowledge.
The Ultra-Orthodox simply refuse to serve in the combat branches of the military. It can be argued that they produce large families that will be conscriptable in time of dire national need, but it is problematic how that really works out.
So, in short, here is Israel again, on the leading edge of socio-cultural-economic evolution in the Free World. No wonder the Christian Bible still ends with the apocalyptic Book of Revelations.
