One of the more obvious features of President Obama proclaiming the Dream Act a done deal, or ending Don't Ask, Don't Tell in the military by a similar executive order, is that the President is not shy about using unilateral executive actions for maximum political gain to himself. A more patient, traditional, and lasting approach would have been to shepherd a new law through congress and then sign the bill into law. An order decreed by the whim of an executive can easily be overthrown by a new executive.
More than all that, such tactics makes one wonder--what other surprises does our president have in his pocket? If the polls continue to show his vulnerability this November, what stunning fait accompli may be produced to induce shock and awe in the jaded electorate, particularly President Obama's own base?
There is one potential surprise so great, so stunning, and so completely unexpected that the progression of startled and horrified public reaction will proceed like this: "OH NO! OH NO! WHY?" and then, after the grandest and most upsetting of all surprises creates a political reaction in which Obama squeaks out a second term, the comments will turn to: "Well, that sneaky, daring fellow. WOW! His balls are Rawlings NBA champions in size!"
Here is the most likely scenario. Once you think it through, you begin to see the logic of how the clever can turn inevitable events to their own benefit.
Proposition One: Israel will attack Iran before the end of the year, probably before the American election. Netanyahu sees himself as running out of time. The only reason the Israeli government has waited this long to strike Iran is because President Obama has bullied and threatened Netanyahu into holding off. But if the Israeli Prime Minister senses that the American White House is weak or on the way out, to be replaced by a president more automatically supportive of Israel, then Israel starts the war against the enemy that is by far the greatest threat to its existence. Important note: this will not be a one-day war. It will take at least 30 days for an Israeli attack plan to really degrade the Iranian nuclear program.
Proposition Two: If the USA does not lend a lot of material to Israel starting immediately, the Israeli war will fail disastrously. Netanyahu knows it, Obama knows it, and after three or four days all the American public will know it.
Proposition Three: Obama will realize that he is positioned perfectly to become the reluctant but dutiful savior of Israel with overwhelmingly forceful and timely action. By doing so, he completely up-stages his critics and wins over vital swing voters. One of the most dependable truths of American democracy is that war favors the incumbent. When the people are frightened and shocked, they definitely do not want to change horses in midstream.
So, that's the formula. . .
